University of the Andes Hosts Guardian Girls Aikido Seminars
On October 19, 2024, as part of the Guardian Girls Colombia program, KIF Colombia and Proyecto TransformándoNOS launched the first seminar of the Guardian Girls Aikido (GGA) series at the Japan Center of the University of the Andes in Bogotá, in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Colombia. This seminar series is designed to empower women and girls through Aikido, a martial art that combines self-defense training with the promotion of gender equality and awareness about violence against women and girls (VAWG). In Colombia, the GGA project is managed by KIF Colombia in partnership with the Colombia Aikido Federation (COPA).
During the inaugural class, about a dozen Colombian women participated for the first time, eager to learn about gender equality and self-defense techniques. The session began with a 30-minute presentation from a high representative of Colombia’s Ministry of Health, who shared valuable insights into the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence in Colombia. Participants were highly engaged and appreciated the informative start to the seminar.
Following the presentation, a certified female GGA instructor led the Aikido-based self-defense training, focusing on foundational techniques. The hour-long session offered participants a hands-on introduction to Aikido, allowing them to practice with peers, gain practical skills, and connect with other women committed to empowerment and safety. Participants found the experience rewarding and looked forward to future sessions, where they could further develop these essential skills.
